A step-by-step guide to building Part Types and Subtypes in the Parts Library.
Overview
In DESIGN, part schedules let you organize the parts that make up your products into clear, reusable categories. You build them in the Parts Library, where everything is grouped under a Schedule Type. Each Schedule Type can contain Part Types (the individual parts you want to track and label) and Subtypes (an extra level of classification you apply to products).
This article walks you through opening the Parts Library, creating a Schedule Type, adding Part Types, and creating and applying Subtypes.
Key terms
Term | What it means |
Schedule Type | The top-level category your parts are grouped under (for example, Casework or Doors). Everything else lives inside a Schedule Type. |
Part Type | An individual part you want to identify and label, such as a side, shelf, or door. Created and named inside a Schedule Type. |
Subtype | An additional classification you can assign to a product to group or sort it more precisely within its Schedule Type. |
Scope | Whether an item is saved to this Project only or to your Global library (available to all projects). |
Before you begin
• Open the project you want to work in.
• Decide whether your part schedules should be saved to this Project only or to your Global library so they can be reused across projects.
Note: Saving to the Global library changes items for every project. Only edit Global items when you intend to update your company-wide standards. |
Open the Parts Library
1. In the left-side menu, open the Schedules group.
2. Select Parts Library. The Parts Library panel opens on the right.
3. At the top of the panel, use the Global / Project toggle to choose where your changes are saved.
Create a Schedule Type
A Schedule Type is the category that holds your Part Types and Subtypes. If the Schedule Type you need already exists, skip to the next section.
4. Choose Create to add a new Schedule Type.
5. Enter a name, then save. The new Schedule Type becomes the active selection.
Tip: You can also Edit or Remove an existing Schedule Type from the same dropdown. |
Add Part Types
Part Types are the individual parts you want to track within the selected Schedule Type.
6. Make sure the correct Schedule Type is selected in Select Schedule Type.
7. Next to Select Part Type, click the plus (+) button to open the Create Part Type dialog.
8. Enter a Name for the part (required), and an optional Description.
9. Confirm the Schedule Type shown in the dialog is correct.
10. Click Create. The new Part Type is added and selected automatically.
Edit a Part Type
With a Part Type selected, an edit panel appears below the dropdown. You can update the following:
• Name - the label used for the part.
• Description - optional details about the part.
• Show Concealed Edges - toggle whether hidden edges are displayed for this part.
Changes save as you make them. To remove a Part Type, open the Select Part Type dropdown and click the trash icon next to it, then confirm.
Create and use Subtypes
What Subtypes are for
Subtypes give you an extra level of classification within a Schedule Type. While a Part Type identifies what a part is, a Subtype lets you group and sort products more precisely - for example, separating items by a category that matters to your shop or you’re reporting. You assign a Subtype to a product in that product's properties, which makes it easy to filter, organize, and schedule similar products together.
Create a Subtype
11. In the Parts Library, confirm the correct Schedule Type is selected. Subtypes belong to a specific Schedule Type.
12. Next to Select Schedule Subtypes, click the plus (+) button to open the Create Subtype dialog.
13. Enter a Name for the Subtype (required).
14. Confirm the Schedule Type is correct and add an optional Description.
15. Click Create. The new Subtype is added and selected automatically.
Note: A Subtype is only available on products that use the same Schedule Type. If you change a product's Schedule Type, a Subtype that no longer matches is cleared. |
